McGregor Waldorf School

GOOD CAUSE

the McGregor Waldorf School was started in 1994, the year democratie began in South Africa. The vision very much wanted to support the birth of a Rainbow Nation and so children from various economic, cultural, social and language backgrounds were welcomed. Today the majority of 160 students come from poor to very poor economic backgrounds, from various language and cultural backgrounds. Most come from the outlying townships with some still living in shacks.
The children are offered a Rudolf Steiner inspired curriculum which aims at developing the ‘whole’ human being (head, heart and hands) so that a more balanced individual with free thinking, imagination, empathy and strong will goes forth into the world. In the hope that they will be able to build a better life for themselves, their families and their communities. In kindergarten and primary school the use of art, music and crafts is important as a healing tool. The high school students do prepare for the matric government exams during the last three years of school. The subjects offered are English, Afrikaans, Computer, Maths literacy, Life Orientation, Visual Arts, Dramatic Arts, Tourism.
The children are taught by trained but highly motivated and dedicated teachers from various cultural backgrounds.
It is a private school with some government subsidies, a small income from school fees (most parents pay according to their income) and the rest through sponsorships and donations.
